Milford have all but secured a place in the PSL promotion/relegation playoffs after taking a major step with a 2-0 victory over University of Pretoria FC at Umhlathuze Sports Complex on Sunday.
Milford strengthened their hold on second place in the Motsepe Foundation Championship standings with 53 points from 29 matches, remaining two points ahead of Cape Town City FC, who defeated Baroka FC 1-0 on the same day.
With both fixtures played simultaneously to avoid either side gaining an advantage, tension was high over who would secure second place in the standings.
This came after Kruger United sealed automatic promotion to the PSL top flight last weekend, leaving the playoff positions still up for grabs.
With so much at stake, AmaTuks faced a difficult challenge against a Milford side that had lost only twice at home in the league this season.
Although the first half ended goalless, Milford continued to apply pressure and eventually broke the deadlock shortly after the restart. Bulelani Sigomoshe reacted quickest after University of Pretoria goalkeeper Mcebisi Langa failed to gather a free kick cleanly, parrying the ball back into play before being punished in the 49th minute.
The second goal arrived in the 88th minute when Siphosethu Ndlabi raced through on goal and beat Langa with a composed right-footed finish into the far corner to seal the victory in Richards Bay.
It was a massive three points for coach Xanti Pupuma’s side, who can officially confirm their playoff place next weekend when they travel to face Hungry Lions away from home.
